Visiting the dentist sometimes causes anxiety and stress, not to call it fear. At Clínica Dental Laura Fernández we have provided a solution to this problem so that our patients can solve their dental problems.
What is the difference between sedation and anesthesia?
When we talk about local anesthesia, we mean the temporary loss of touch and pain. Local anesthesia is applied, fundamentally, when the dentist performs fillings (fillings), periodontal treatments, surgical treatments, among others. However, sedation is used to calm or reassure a person. The most common is to use it in dental implant surgeries. Since the objectives pursued by both techniques are different, conscious sedation and local anesthesia are complementary.
What are the procedures for conscious sedation?
The steps for conscious sedation may differ depending on the procedure being performed. This is what you can typically expect from a general procedure with conscious sedation:
- You will lie in the dental chair.
- You will receive a sedative by the Anesthetist: This may be an IV or a face mask that allows you to inhale the sedative.
- Will wait until the sedative takes effect: Intravenous sedatives usually start working in a few minutes or less, while oral sedatives are metabolized in about 30 to 60 minutes.
- The anesthetist monitors your breathing and blood pressure: When your breathing and blood pressure are at normal levels, dental treatment will proceed.
- The dentist will begin the procedure once the sedative takes effect.: Depending on the procedure, you will be under sedation for more or less time. At all times, the anesthetist accompanies the dentist throughout the procedure.
